Senior QA Automation Engineer

Job description

BibleBooster is a global digital Bible engagement initiative “by Bible Societies, for Bible Societies”, delivering websites, apps, and digital tools in more than 40 countries serving over 12 million users annually. Our platform is white-label: a single codebase ships as dozens of separately branded apps and websites, each with its own languages, Bible translations, and content. That multiplication is what makes quality hard, and it is why we are looking for a QA Automation Engineer to take ownership of quality across everything we deliver.

You would be stepping into an established QA function. Our current approach relies heavily on manual verification, with some automation already in place. Your job is to keep that manual safety net working while implementing a coherent automation strategy.

This is a full-time, Cairo-based role.

Overall objective

Ensure the quality of everything BibleBooster delivers, across mobile, web, and API, using whichever method fits best: structured manual testing, exploratory testing, or automation.

Key responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end quality for our releases, covering the critical user journeys: authentication, Bible reading, audio playback, search, notes and highlights, reading plans, and offline use.
  • Maintain and improve the existing manual test process, including test plans, structured regression passes, and release checklists.
  • Carry out exploratory testing on new features, where a well-informed human is still the fastest way to find real problems.
  • Continuously assess which checks are repetitive, stable, and high-value enough to justify automating, and make the case for that work in the backlog.
  • Propose, and then implement, a structured, coherent, automation strategy for testing. This can include E2E, smoke testing, contract testing, and other approaches, based on stack requirements.
  • Turn user stories into clear, testable acceptance criteria at refinement time, challenging requirements that cannot be verified.
  • Work with crash reporting and monitoring tools to spot quality problems in production early, and turn them into regression tests so the same defect cannot return.
  • Ensure technical documentation meets quality standards and that expectations are clear.

Our tech stack

  • Mobile: Flutter (iOS and Android), multi-brand
  • Web: Angular, multi-brand
  • Backend / APIs: AWS API Gateway + Lambda
  • Data & storage: Firebase Firestore, AWS DynamoDB, S3 and OpenSearch
  • Authentication: Firebase Auth
  • Content: WordPress CMS, PayloadCMS
  • Media & infrastructure: AWS Elemental for audio processing, Route 53 for DNS
  • Internal tooling: BrandEditor, a custom admin web app for brand settings, Bibles and users, in .NET.

Collaboration and quality culture

  • Work day to day with the mobile, full-stack, and DevOps colleagues in Cairo, and with the distributed product and technical leadership in Europe.
  • Participate in sprint planning, refinement, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives within our agile delivery process.
  • Contribute to our definition of done, so testability is designed in rather than retrofitted.
  • Coach developers on writing and maintaining their own unit and integration tests, and champion testing as a shared responsibility rather than a separate phase.

Requirements

Technical skills

  • 3+ years of professional experience in software testing, covering both structured manual testing and test automation.
  • Strong programming ability in TypeScript/JavaScript.
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining automated UI test suites for mobile, web, or both, using tools such as Flutter integration_test, Patrol, Appium, Playwright, or Cypress.
  • Solid API testing experience, including REST, authentication flows, and contract or schema validation.
  • Practical experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Bitbucket Pipelines, or equivalent) and keeping them green.
  • Comfortable with Git-based workflows, code review, and working in a shared codebase to the same standard as the development team.
  • Familiarity with cloud-hosted backends, ideally AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3) and Firebase.

Professional experience

  • Proven track record of taking a product from manual or ad-hoc testing to a maintained automated suite that the team actually trusts.
  • Experience testing production applications with substantial user bases.
  • Experience in agile/scrum environments, working iteratively alongside developers and product people.
  • Experience working in remote, cross-cultural, or distributed teams.

Soft skills

  • Clear written communicator. A defect report you write should be reproducible by someone who has never seen the feature.
  • Pragmatic about where to invest automation effort, and honest about what is not covered. You know that an automated test nobody trusts is worse than an honest manual checklist.
  • Autonomous and self-directed, with a strong sense of ownership over release quality.
  • Sensitivity to diverse cultural contexts, and commitment to building inclusive, accessible digital products.

Desirable (not essential)

  • Experience testing white-label or multi-tenant products where one codebase ships as many branded builds.
  • Experience with device farms such as Firebase Test Lab or BrowserStack.
  • Experience with performance and load testing tools such as k6 or JMeter.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG) and automated accessibility tooling.
  • Experience with offline-first or low-bandwidth applications.
  • Background or personal interest in faith-based, non-profit, or social-impact organisations.

Language requirements

  • Fluent Arabic. Day-to-day work inside the Cairo office is conducted in Arabic.
  • Working technical English. You do not need to be a polished speaker, but you must be able to write clear defect reports, follow technical discussions, and hold a working conversation with our Product Owner and technical leads in Europe.
